Irrigation FAQs — Freeman Irrigation

Answers to common questions about irrigation installation, servicing, and WiFi automation in Selwyn and Canterbury.

Q: How much does irrigation installation cost in Selwyn or Canterbury?

A: Costs vary depending on section size, system type, and whether WiFi automation is included. A standard residential system for a Rolleston or Lincoln section typically starts from around $3,000–$5,000 installed. Commercial and lifestyle block projects are quoted individually. Freeman Irrigation offers free site visits and no-obligation quotes — call 0800 22 33 92 to get started.

Q: Can you install irrigation without digging trenches?

A: Yes. Freeman Irrigation uses a mole plough system that installs underground pipework with minimal surface disruption. Your lawn and garden are left virtually untouched — no mess, no long restoration time. It can also be done after your build is complete.

Q: What WiFi irrigation controllers do you install?

A: We install Hunter HydroWise and Orbit B-hyve WiFi controllers. These connect to local weather station data so your system automatically adjusts watering schedules when rain is forecast, saving water and money. You can control and monitor everything via an app on your smartphone from anywhere.

Q: Do you service irrigation systems you didn’t install?

A: Yes. Freeman Irrigation services and maintains all makes and types of irrigation systems. This includes in-ground sprinkler systems, pump servicing, K-Line paddock irrigation, and controller upgrades. We offer an annual Warrant of Fitness service to keep your system running at peak efficiency.

Q: What areas do Freeman Irrigation service?

A: Based in Rolleston, we service the full Selwyn district — including Lincoln, Prebbleton, Halswell, Burnham, Darfield, Kirwee, West Melton, and Leeston — as well as greater Christchurch, Rangiora, Pegasus, and Ashburton. For large projects we travel throughout Canterbury and the South Island.

Q: How often should I get my irrigation system serviced in Canterbury?

A: We recommend an annual Warrant of Fitness service, ideally in spring before the Canterbury irrigation season begins. This checks all sprinkler heads, valves, controllers, and connections for wear, blockages, and efficiency — helping prevent water waste and costly repairs during peak summer use.

Q: Which irrigation brands do Freeman Irrigation use?

A: We use only leading global brands: Hunter, Toro, and Rainbird for pop-up lawn sprinklers; Hunter HydroWise and Orbit B-hyve for WiFi controllers; Hunter Bluetooth battery controllers; and Hydro PC garden dripline with in-built emitters for garden beds. Products carry manufacturer warranties of 3–5 years.

Q: Can you install irrigation systems in new subdivisions?

A: Yes — new subdivision work is one of our specialties. We have completed full irrigation packages for major Rolleston and Selwyn developments including Falcon’s Landing, Beaumont Park, Levi Park, and The Woods in Prebbleton. We work with developers and builders to integrate irrigation during or after construction.
